An Obvious Mistake
1 Chronicles 13:1 (KJV)
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.
There is in my mind no doubt, but that David was the greatest of all leaders other than Jesus Christ. That said, he was not perfect. There is as much to learn from his mistakes as from his wisdom. One of the problems I see is that people too quickly ascribe wisdom to what was actually a mistake.
The account of this chapter chronicles an obvious mistake.
David tried to return the ark of God on a cart instead of by the priests. He failed to consult the Bible. God had directed that the ark be carried on the shoulders of the priests.
- He did it with fanfare
- He did it with emotion
- He did it with the best, a new cart
- He did it with the counsel and support of the people
But he did it wrong.
As a result:
- Uzza died
- David was displeased and
- The ark did not come to Jerusalem
With all that goes wrong in this chapter, I want to suggest it was not right to consult all the people He did. It was not the will of God’s people that David needed. What he needed was the Word of God on the subject.
There are certainly times when getting expert opinion and majority support is helpful. However, those should never, at any time, supplant the plain teaching of God’s Word.
